Ford generated significant buzz when it introduced the 2022 battery-electric F-150 Lightning on May 19. Among the pickup’s key points, says Ford, are two electric motors that, depending on the battery pack selected, can provide up to 563 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque. Maximum range is claimed to be 300 miles. The spec sheet says the Lightning can also tow up to 10,000 pounds and haul a 2,000-pound payload, which will undoubtedly affect electric range. The pickup can also be used as a backup home generator during power outages and provide basic energy needs for up to three days.…
A number of news outlets have indicated the automaker is dropping the compact CX-3 wagon and the midsize Mazda6 sedan at the end of the 2021 model year. The CX-3 arrived for 2016, and it has remained basically unchanged. The current-generation Mazda6 has also stayed the course, a turbocharged-four-cylinder-engine option was added for 2018. To offset these losses, the new MX-30 battery-electric model is expected to arrive for 2022 but will initially be offered only to California residents. There are rumors that the Mazda6 will be replaced by a new upscale sedan using a rear-wheel-drive platform and an inline six-cylinder…

The product’s 20 LEDs provide 300 lumens of light, dispersed over a 210-degree range. The lightweight unit can be set to either high or low beam, the strap can attach to a hardhat or helmet, and the three AAA batteries are claimed to provide up to 25 hours of light. The Liteband Flex 300 Headlamp sells for $20 from www.amazon.com.
General Motors’ premium division has recently been teasing the public with prototypes of the midsize Lyriq wagon. At last, Cadillac unveiled the finished version, which becomes available in early 2022 as a 2023 model. The Lyriq’s styling is nothing short of stunning and is arguably the best-looking electric hatchback to be revealed by any automaker so far. A single 33-inch (measured diagonally) is an integral part of the vehicle’s futuristic interior. The standard 19-speaker audio system includes two speakers within the front-seat headrests. The Lyriq’s electric motor is rated at 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque and the battery…
If you haven’t heard, the little hatchback that began life as the Rabbit back in 1975 is departing for good, sort of. The hot-hatch Golf GTI and hotter-hatch Golf R variants will return for 2022, although the 147-horsepower base-model Golf bows out. In its place, the 2022 Taos subcompact utility vehicle, which is smaller than the compact Tiguan, will compete with the similarly sized Chevrolet Trailblazer, Ford EcoSport and Jeep Renegade, to name a few. The Taos comes with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 158 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard with front-wheel-drive versions, while a seven-speed…
No, not a new turbocharged engine, but a boost in ground clearance to 9.5 inches from 8.7. This is specific to the 2022 Wilderness edition of the all-wheel-drive wagon, which will join the regular Outback in the lineup. Along with a unique front-end design, the Outback Wilderness comes with a front skid plate, unique 17-inch wheels and all-terrain tires. The vehicle gets a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which is optional in other Outbacks. Subaru has tweaked the standard continuously variable transmission’s final drive ratio to provide greater low-end torque. All-weather floor mats and water-repellent interior trim are also part…
The return of the General Motors’ large-and-in-charge brand will begin for the 2022 model year with an electric pickup. It has since been announced that a utility-vehicle version will arrive in the spring of 2023 as a 2024 model. Although similar-looking, it’s nearly nine inches shorter overall that the truck. The two electric motors will produce up to 830 horsepower, or about 170 horses less than the max power of the pickup. Range is claimed to be between 250 and 300 miles, depending on the trim level. According to GMC, zero-to-60-mph will take 3.5 seconds. At launch, buyers can expect…
Startup automaker Alpha Motors of California is getting in on the electric-pickup market. The compact-sized, retro-styled Alpha Wolf and the Ace coupe will both head to market sometime in 2023. The Wolf will be available in front-wheel-drive using a single electric motor, or with all-wheel-drive version using a second motor in the back. Power ratings haven’t been announced, but Alpha claims the Wolf will have a driving range of between 250 and 275 miles (depending on drivetrain) and can accelerate to 60 mph from rest in 6.2 seconds. Pricing starts at US $36,000. The Alpha Wolf is an electric pickup…
