The automaker is adding an electric vehicle to join the similarly powered i3 hatchback. The iX, which launches for 2022, is about the same size as the X5 utility vehicle but is built on a dedicated platform designed for a line of electric vehicles. BMW has not released the expected battery range (or pricing), but it states the iX’s two electric motors will collectively produce about 500 horsepower and propel the vehicle to 60 mph from rest in about 4.5 seconds. Using a commercial fast-charge station (found at dealerships), the water-cooled battery pack can be recharged to 80 percent capacity…
Scheduled for a 2021 unveiling, the automaker’s compact utility vehicle looks nothing like its predecessor and is also considerably larger. The plethora of powertrain choices begins with a 187-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. An optional turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder delivers 180 horses. On the hybrid front, the Tucson’s base system is a turbo 1.6-liter-four-cylinder/electric-motor combo that produces 227 net horsepower. The available plug-in hybrid system increases that output to 261 horsepower and it can also operate on electricity alone for up to 28 miles. The Tucson N performance model, which is slated to arrive soon after launch, is expected with a 275-horsepower…
That’s what The Sleuth believes after viewing images of the automaker’s Navara model, which is what the Frontier is called outside of North America. It appears that Nissan’s designers have used the larger Titan pickup as a template, since the resemblance between the two trucks is obvious. However, where the Navara is available with a turbo-diesel engine, the new Frontier will stick the 3.8-liter V-6 that was new for 2020 (310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque). The engine is hooked to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Nissan previously confirmed that the 2021 Frontier would be available with a number of…
The all-wheel-drive R stands out as the most powerful and the most expensive Golf model. There were rumors that it might be retired (there was no 2020 model) as VW focuses on a number of upcoming electric models. The Spymaster now confirms that a new Golf R will arrive for the 2022 model year. The four-door (only) hatchback gets the same basic body as other Golfs, but comes with a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The 2019 R made 288 horsepower and 280 pound-feet. The six-speed manual transmission might not be…
If you have a taste for hot cars and sizzling-hot food, the Engine Grill from Summit Racing Equipment should satisfy both hungers. The propane barbecue has the look of a modified V-8 engine, but lifting the top reveals 300 square inches of cooking surface atop the block. The two-burner grill comes with a stainless-steel grate, temperature gauge and an electronic ignition. But perhaps the coolest part is the functioning exhaust headers that actually smoke while you’re grilling up your favorite foods. A wheeled engine stand and a cloth cover are included. Toting unsecured items in your pickup truck or open trailer is never a good idea and can pose a danger to others on the road. It can also get you into trouble with law enforcement. A solution is to purchase a heavy-duty Cargo Net from Gladiator Cargo Gear. The product is manufactured using high-strength weatherproof webbing and comes with four attaching straps. The Gladiator Cargo Net is available in six different sizes, from four by four feet to 7.3 by 13.3 (large enough for a six- by-12-foot trailer). Prices range from $115 to $200. That’s what The Sleuth believes after viewing images of the iconic sports car undergoing track testing with what appears to be a jacked-up ride height and fender flares. Previously, a company spokesman hinted at building a limited-edition 911 for fans wanting to venture farther afield than the street and/or the track. Porsche has some experience with off-road models dating back to the mid-1980s when a number of all-wheel-drive 911 Safaris competed in rally-racing events, including the grueling Paris-Dakar rally, which the car won. There’s no word whether such a specialized 911 will be available, but given the current off-roading craze,…
The new GV70 will join the larger GV80 in spring as a 2022 model. In The Sleuth’s opinion, this competitor to the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Infiniti QX50 is easily the best looking of the bunch. From the chain-link-style V-shaped grille to the curved rear end, the GV70 conveys high fashion. A 300-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder is the base engine, with the GV70 Sport getting a 375-horsepower twin-turbo V-6. This model also gets a distinctive grille plus unique interior and exterior trim, paint and 21-inch wheels. The Sleuth expects pricing to begin in low-$40,000 territory. The GV70 will be the…
The Sleuth reckons you would have to be of a certain age to recall the Vanwall name. The race team begun by Englishman Tony Vandervell in the mid-1950s included Stirling Moss as principal driver. Vanwall’s greatest success came in 1958 when it won six races plus the Formula One Constructors’ Championship. It was the team’s final full season of competition. Now, a British firm is reviving the Vanwall name and plans to build six continuation-series race cars resembling the winner. Each will be fitted with a modern 270-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The company behind the project will retain one of…
