It’s always big news when Ferrari unveils a new car. The ultra-sleek midengine 296 GTB plug-in hybrid comes with a 654-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. It combines with a 164-horsepower electric motor to generate a net 818 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission directs power to the rear wheels. The 296 GTB can run for up to 15 miles on battery power alone. A special option package includes carbon-fiber body panels and a lightweight Lexan rear window to trim 33 pounds from the base 3,240-pound weight. Pricing in the United States is expected to start in the $280,000 range.
The rear-wheel-drive 296 GTB is the only Ferrari with a V-6 engine. Teamed with an electric motor, the net output is 818 horsepower.
